Barbara Groot grew up in Southern California, where the radiant light of the landscape shaped her early sensibilities. After studying costume design at UCLA and opening a custom beachwear store in Santa Monica, she embarked on a yearlong journey around the world. It was an adventure that deepened her openness to chance and change, qualities that continue to shape her art. She later worked in Manhattan’s fashion industry before turning more fully toward painting, a practice that she describes as fueled by “happy accidents” and the surprises that emerge when she lets go of control.

 The distinctive light and natural beauty of the East End have long been an important influence on Groot’s bold, lyrical canvases.
